GROUP/DIVISION SUMMARY
The Clinical Diagnostics Division (CDD) is an organization made up of business units which develop, manufacture and market instruments and consumables that serve a broad, diverse mix of diagnostic segments. The major business units include Niche Diagnostics, Biomarkers, Clinical Diagnostic Systems (includes clinical mass spectrometry), and Clinical Diagnostic Reagents. The division manages a diverse portfolio of products servicing multiple end markets. CDD maintains recognized technology and manufacturing leadership in the markets in which it serves. CDD has approximately $800M in revenue and 2,000 employees across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Primary global business locations are in California and Virginia for the United States; primary global business unit locations also include Germany and Finland. Emerging markets focus particularly in the China marketplace. The Clinical Diagnostics Division is part of the Specialty Diagnostics Group within Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Position Summary:

The Lead Scientist will provide scientific and system concept leadership for the Cascadion SM Clinical Analyzer and ensure assay development and platform development plans and results are technically and scientifically sound, paying careful attention to the interdependence between assays and platform. The Lead Scientist will partner closely with product management and platform and assay development leaders to ensure product roadmaps and long range plans incorporate the essential technical, clinical and medical inputs. The position reports to the Program Director, Clinical Mass Spectrometry and will be part of the cross-functional Cascadion program leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide scientific and system concept leadership for Cascadion SM Clinical Analyzer
  • Ensure the highest practicable levels of analytical performance for the design, manufacture, quality control for the analyzer platform as well as the assays developed for it.
  • Throughout the product lifecycle, ensure assay development and platform development plans and results are technically and scientifically sound, paying careful attention to the interdependence between assays and platform
  • Enable progress on key development projects by providing scientific guidance and access to top tier collaborators
  • Partner directly with the Director of Product Management to ensure product roadmaps and long range plans incorporate the essential technical, clinical and medical inputs.
  • Scrutinize all program data beginning with experimental design through critical review of results in the appropriate clinical and medical context
  • Lead, coordinate or assist root cause analysis efforts to unlock technical and scientific challenges at the system level
  • Provide creative and pragmatic solutions to technical challenges
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

Required
  • PhD, MD or equivalent experience
  • More than 10 years of experience operating a clinical LC/MS laboratory in a private or public clinical laboratory.
  • Hands on technical expertise in developing, validating and running routine clinical assays on LC/MS
  • Deep understanding of LC, MS and sample preparation hardware, software and procedures
  • Understanding of EU or US regulatory requirements and CLSI guidelines pertinent to clinical LC/MS
  • Strong systems thinker
  • Extensive first-hand experience with applications of LC/MS technology to at least one of the following specialties: Toxicology, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Endocrinology
  • Demonstrated track record of accomplishment in a private enterprise
Preferred
  • Established reputation in laboratory medicine and/or mass spectrometry as demonstrated by publications in peer reviewed journals, invitations to speak at related meetings.
  • Extensive experience interacting with clinicians to ensure laboratory results are relevant, accurate and appropriately interpreted
  • Prior experience in IVD product development

The position require 30-50 days of global travel annually and regular, minimum monthly travel to the CDS business HQ in Vantaa/Finland
