The Staff Scientist, Research and Development is a newly created, key role in our Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division.

What will you do?
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and scientists to design innovative mass spectrometers which are used in life sciences, forensics, toxicology and environmental analyses
  • Initiate, plan and execute scientific research with an emphasis on next generation technology, trade secrets and intellectual property
  • Conduct feasibility studies and research to prove product concepts
  • Develop and test new algorithms to make the instruments easier to use
  • Contribute to the product development organization during feasibility, implementation and process confirmation phases, allowing thorough conceptualization and overall design and testing of new products
  • Act as a scientific expert during feasibility, implementation and process confirmation phases, allowing thorough conceptualization and overall design and testing of new products
  • Influence the scientific community and market via contribution to patents, publications and conference presentations
  • Provide accurate task and project completion time estimates
  • Evaluate competitive products and new technologies from research institutions, aiming to enhance future products
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and service teams to improve quality, manufacturability and serviceability of product

How will you get there?

Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master's in science, engineering, or related field (physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics, chemistry) and 6 years of related experience
  • Or a PhD and 3 years of related experience
  • Specific experience with atmospheric pressure ion sources for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is desired

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles, concepts, and practices in mass spectrometer theory, components, and related disciplines to lead new product and solution development (such as electromagnetic fields, ionization sources, mass analyzers, RF systems, vacuum systems, electrometers, charged particle detectors, and charged particle simulations)
  • Specific experience with atmospheric pressure ion sources for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is desired
  • Proficient programming skills in one or more industry standard computer languages or firmware is desired (C#, C++, Python, Lua)
  • Ability to independently design, plan, and execute project tasks and scientific research and development
  • Ability to plan and control project timescales and execution strategies in complex technical and operational situations
  • Ability to drive the realization of technical excellence and under the guidance of R&D leadership undertake targeted development projects with a focus on improving performance and end user convenience
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Property basics, risks, and strategies.
  • Ability to contribute or produce invention disclosures, patents and publications.
  • Technical communication: ability to produce and present original technical communication materials for internal and external audiences
  • Record keeping: to maintain detailed records of all work carried out which are maintained as the intellectual property of the company
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Domestic or international travel may be required
