Job Description

Position Summary

The Program Manager, R&D will be responsible for driving, coordinating and reporting on program performance for the product organization in the Digital Science business unit. This role will lead and manage strategically important NPDI and non-NPDI projects. This role will ensure that critical projects are completed on time, on target and within budget, to achieve the desired goals. The Program Manager, R&D will support the ongoing prioritization process and will serve as the central point for maintaining and reporting on all projects in the business. Participates in resource mapping and business case formulation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting the R&D project portfolio of the Digital Science business unit, including new product development and sustaining projects
  • Lead multiple cross functional project teams simultaneously with members from across the world
  • Collaborate with teams to develop task-level project plans, and empower the team to succeed by showing clear ownership and driving accountability of tasks
  • Assures that projects are organized and executed in accordance with the SDLC and NPDI processes
  • Assures that projects are managed utilizing the Project Management Competencies of scope, time, cost, quality, risk, resource planning, communications, and procurement to successfully complete project deliverables as planned.
  • Monitors progress of all programs and projects in the portfolio and leverages that data to identify cross-functional issues and recommend mitigations / resolutions (e.g., identifying resource constraints and recommending changes)
  • Maintains communication with leadership team, ensuring awareness of potential roadblocks, risks or challenges and proposing solutions, as well as maintaining and communicating metrics
  • Identifies best practices within the company, and outside of Thermo Fisher, and serves as a conduit for best-practice sharing across the business unit
  • Responsible for gate review content and timing as per the project management process, and post-launch project reviews to ensure lessons learned are integrated into current and future projects
  • Implement a portfolio-wide planning mechanism to drive improved resource utilization
  • Works closely with Product and Business Unit teams on developing and improving processes
  • Advances project management culture and maturity throughout the global organization

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate for this role should be proficient in program and project management, a highly effective communicator, and experienced working in a global, matrixed environment. Key requirements/qualifications are:

  • B.S. or M.S. in a scientific or technical discipline; Master’s degree is a plus
  • 5+ years of experience managing large, complex projects in software, Life Sciences, manufacturing, and/or related industries
  • Excellent core project management skills such as facilitation, planning, budgeting, financial analysis, change management, stakeholder alignment, risk management, communication planning, and results delivery
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations to senior management outlining program benefits, status, issues, and recommendations
  • Outstanding organizational, planning, process development, communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, PPM tools; experience with Atlassian is a plus)
  • Demonstrated expertise with various industry PM methodologies including AGILE, SCRUM, Waterfall
  • Ability to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions
  • Self-motivated, ability to manage multiple projects of high complexity with minimal direction
  • Shares information, addresses conflict professionally, and fulfills commitments, works well across functional groups
  • Global travel estimated at less than 40%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in or building a successful project management discipline, especially a PMO, in a manufacturing or scientific environment
  • Experience supporting significant change management and strategic initiatives across large multinational organizations where projects are executed with shared resources
  • FDA, regulatory, GMP experience
  • PMP Certification
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma
