Division Specific Information
The Clinical Next-Generation Sequencing business, part of our Life Sciences Solutions group. Personalized precision medicine has become a new paradigm in oncology treatment, offering hope for improved cancer treatments. Advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) allow clinicians and laboratory professionals to routinely gather therapy-relevant molecular information in a timely fashion, a prerequisite for true personalized medicine in the face of a growing list of molecularly targeted drugs.

The Clinical Next-Generation Sequencing Division (CSD) offers multiple solutions for solid tumor biomarker testing to aid in identifying those patients eligible for treatment, based on Ion Torrent and Oncomine NGS technology.

How will you make an impact?
Next Generation DNA sequencing (NGS) is rapidly reshaping life sciences, translational research, and clinical diagnostics. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, a leading contributor in these fields, we are dedicated to improving quality of sequencing and broaden the range of its applications. If you are a motivated and innovative bioinformatics scientist seeking to advance your career in these fields, we would like to invite you to join our NGS R&D team in Carlsbad, CA.

What will you do?

  • Support new product introductions (NPI), focusing on sequencing and analysis strategies for oncology, inherited diseases, pathogen identification, reproductive health, and other novel applications.
  • You will balance between improving core technology of AmpliSeqTM and providing customized data analysis to support bench scientists.
  • Key AmpliSeqTM responsibilities are supporting new panel development and monitoring performance of existing products.
  • Employ sequence analysis and structural methods to mitigate sequencing bias, as well as innovative data mining approaches for system improvement and troubleshooting.
  • Assiist molecular biologists with variant calling, phasing, and genome annotations, also work closely with product management and instrument teams.
You will play a pivotal role in tool development, translating new product requirements into prototype and production-level software, testing in a fast-paced environment, and coordinating fixes. Other responsibilities include keeping abreast of the latest developments in genomics and algorithms, giving internal and external presentations, and maintaining contacts with customers.

How will you get here?
Education:
  • Ph.D. degree related to bioinformatics, physics, biological or computer sciences, preferably with at least 2 years of relevant industry experience. Outstanding candidates with equivalent qualifications may be accepted.
Experience:
  • Solid knowledge of next-generation sequencing analysis under the Linux environment, with good understanding of software engineering and data analysis principles.
  • Proficiencies in a scripting language (PERL or Python) and a statistical package (R or MatLab) are required, and C/C++/Java capabilities are big pluses.
  • Many of your tasks will require skills with parallel computing and database management systems, as well as solid background in genetics and statistics.
  • Experience with PCR primer design, sequence and motif analysis is particularly welcome.
  • Familiarity with product development experience and/or project management will make you a stronger candidate.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • You are expected to work independently, be able to prioritize, focus and multi-task, with strong data mining and problem solving expertise.
  • Effective communication skills, especially for presenting scientific results, keeping records and working collaboratively in a team are necessary.
