Position Summary: This position is within the Fisher BioServices business unit of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The Project Manager I acts as a project manager to research, develop and implement program improvements and organizational tools. S/he assists the PD and Asst. PD to implement emerging technologies to continually improve program activities and objectives. The Project Manager I is responsible for identifying reagents needing expansion, projecting the needs for particular reagents and developing methods to minimize back-ordered items with a focus on protein expression, production, and purification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works directly with the Assistant Project Director to plan reagent purchases, expansions and acquisitions.

  • Minimize "back ordered" items by monitoring reagent demand and inventory and working with subcontractors, vendors and donors to replenish stocks.

  • Works closely with donors to replenish reagent stocks of non-expandable items; orders necessary reagents from commercial sources following government procurement procedures.

  • Coordinates receiving reagents into inventory.

  • Works independently to complete tasks.

  • Assists scientists with questions related to program procedures and policies via phone and e-mail.

  • Communicates scientific needs of the registrants to the APD, PD and to the government Contracting Office Representative (COR). Updates scientific and technical data for reagents on the website, including relevant QC data, donor provided protocols, and user provided information.

  • Coordinates resources with the Operations Coordinator and Operations Supervisor to ensure efficient and timely processing of orders and shipments.

  • Actively engages in assisting with budgeting and initiating program improvements.

  • Assists managers in progressing program activities utilizing new emerging technology.

  • Provide support to the Operations Coordinator and Operations Supervisor for processing and reviewing orders and shipments.

  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Requires strong customer focus, excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Requires strong scientific background and knowledge of general laboratory techniques.

  • Requires ability to perform literature searches using online formats.

  • Requires strong working knowledge of administrative support functions.

  • Requires computer literacy with command of office software, including Word, Excel, and database applications.

  • Requires excellent communication and team working skills.

  • Requires accuracy with all data, communications, and record keeping.

  • Requires the ability to work independently.

  • Requires ability to handle multiple tasks in different stages of development.

  • Requires ability to learn categories of reagents; ability to apply restrictions on reagents as required; safe handling of biohazardous materials; familiarity with OSHA requirements for handling infectious substances.

Education/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or in a related field, Master’s degree preferred,

  • Prefer experience with protein expression, production and purification,

  • Prefer experience with HIV or related viruses and quality control procedures,

  • Prefer familiarity with government and state regulations on storing, handling and distribution of biologicals.

  • Requires 3-5 years of laboratory experience in virology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field.

Work Schedule:
8:00AM to 4:30PM core hours, additional hours as required.

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a cold environment with exposure to dry ice, liquid nitrogen cryogenics, hazardous and infectious agents, marked changes in temperature.

  • Must use personal protective equipment and adhere to safety protocols.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and push up to 70 lbs.

  • Must be able to process and handle materials frozen on dry ice (-78°C) or liquid nitrogen (-196°C).

  • Must be able to work in walk-in freezers or refrigerators periodically, up to 5 hours per day.

  • Must be able to use a computer up to 6 hours per day.

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory and warehouse/repository environment.
