How will you make an impact?

All operations are conducted with an emphasis on safety and within the guidelines and requirements of ISO and 5-S/Lean production environments. The engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the large scale reactors and efficient, multi-step organic synthesis, purification and formulation at the large scale to achieve production goals relative to Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost.

What will you do?

  • Completion of weekly production work orders
  • Process documentation is maintained in the form of batch record sheets, reports and lab notebooks
  • Provide mechanical maintenance support to equipment, keeping it in good working order
  • The engineer is responsible for safe operation of the equipment used in large organic synthesis such as: heating and cooling reactors, cleaning reactors, running the centrifuge, running a sieve, maintaining large vacuum pumps and the assembly of equipment including glassware
  • Develop, improve and implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) for all assigned equipment
  • Forecast equipment requirements for future production
  • Design, develop, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes, materials, and facilities by scale-up, new product development, capital project engineering, and validation
  • Analyze and improve key processes to eliminate waste and reduce cycle times to improve customer service and satisfaction and reduce costs
  • Interact with suppliers, operations, logistics, QA, EHS, and R&D
  • Complete metrology work orders as assigned

How will you get here?

Education

  • BS in Engineering (ex. Chemical Engineering) or equivalent industrial experience

Experience

  • Experience with setting up and dismantling large-scale organic production equipment (Pfaudler style reactors knowledge preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Process/chemical engineering – knowledge of chemical process unit operations including pumps and piping, heat exchangers, vacuum systems, compressors, reactors, separations, distillation, heating, humidification, exhaust scrubber, drying ovens, water purifiers, filtration, and filtration systems, particle classification, etc.
  • Ability to work with moisture sensitive and hazardous materials and flammable solvents
  • Ability to routinely lift 50-60 lbs
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interpersonal interactions and to sell initiatives and proposals
  • Must contribute to and foster the development of a healthy cooperative environment
  • Working knowledge of statistics: Regression Analysis, ANOVA, Control Charting, DOE, hypothesis testing, response surface methodology and in PC applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be flexible to work occasional off-shift or weekend hours as needed (most likely on a limited basis)
  • Ability to travel as requested (most likely on a limited basis)

Hazardous Waste Generation/Management:

Associates in this position may, as part of their job activities, generate or manage hazardous waste as defined by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Individuals in this position are required to receive initial hazardous waste training within the first 30 working days of assignment. The initial waste training shall include but not be limited to the following general categories: Identifying hazardous and solid waste, hazardous waste management, recycling, treatment and disposal, emergency preparedness, record keeping, pollution prevention and waste reduction. Following initial training the Associate in this position will receive annual refresher training in the same topic field as listed above. Associate should be comfortable working frequently with organics, including flammable solvents, strong acids / bases, potential biohazards (including raw animal serums), large scale bacterial cultures, and hazardous chemicals.
