Job Description

Position Summary:

The EHS/Continuous Improvement Business Systems Lead liaises with site and business leaders to support environmental, health, safety and sustainability programs. This position supports the global EHS strategy through a program that seeks to proactively manage EHS & Sustainability in order to comply with all applicable regulations and Thermo Fisher Scientific standards, achieve a safe work environment, and minimize impact to the environment. In addition, the lead will identify, assess, and analyze opportunities for continuous improvement. Also, responsible for managing daily facilities needs and projects related to the site and further ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and Thermo Fisher Scientific standards. This multi-disciplinary role reports to the site operations lead and will include cross functional engagement with Global EHS and Process Improvement Teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with implementing EHS and Sustainability programs and processes that are safe, environmentally sensitive and meet regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Track and analyze site monthly Environmental Health and Safety trending metrics in collaboration with Site Safety Committee.
  • Provide technical and regulatory support for chemical handling, biosafety, hazardous and bio hazardous waste, industrial hygiene and laser safety.
  • Support compliance in construction and contractor based safety programs site-wide, including but not limited to: Lock Out/Tag Out, electrical safety, confined space safety, fall protection.
  • Collect and maintain accurate EHS metrics while driving practical process improvements.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies on EHS matters.
  • Support EHS Sustainability initiatives at the site, and engage employees to get involved in projects resulting in less waste, using less energy and water.
  • Engage employees in safety initiatives to eliminate or control safety hazards and reduce risk of an injury or chemical release.
  • Lead site safety committees, and waste minimization/sustainability committees to ensure effectiveness.
  • Support customer audits, EHS audits and non-EHS audits requiring EHS participation
  • Provide technical and regulatory EHS guidance for programs which may include hazardous waste, laser safety, machine safety, air emissions, hazard communication, injury and illness prevention, chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, lab safety, emergency preparedness, facilities/contractor safety, and pollution prevention
  • Develop, implement, deliver, and track effective training programs
  • Effectively communicate EHS information to large and small groups including site leaders and employees
  • Assist with job hazard analysis assessments and new equipment and/or process safety reviews. Monitor closure of action items.
  • Assist with the site emergency response
  • Provide effective Incident Response and follow up and seek assistance from EHS Leader as needed
  • Oversee and conduct Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Ensure injury and illness cases are effectively managed to closure and preventive measures are identified, communicated, and implemented.
  • Site POC for WC
  • Participate in EHS inspection program and track corrective action items to completion
  • Submit regulatory reports as required
  • Promote a learning organization that embraces continuous improvement and leverages the talent of the organization to achieve its business objectives and be comfortable to challenge organizational leaders as necessary to create an action-biased culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
  • This individual will be responsible for management of a structured Project Management program, including coaching and mentoring of the tools and concepts. This individual will also lead and facilitate key continuous improvement efforts in support of business priorities.
  • Partner with Business Unit leadership team in defining the overall strategies necessary to improve customer, quality and productivity performance and achieve its financial goals and in support of the divisional Continuous Improvement -Business System vision as well as accelerate the cultural changes necessary to support the PPI-Business System program.
  • Lead Practical Process Improvement Steering Team and facilitate continuous improvement efforts in support of corporate strategic goals; including providing lean training to departments and teams and leading kaizen events.
  • Challenge organizational leaders as necessary to create an action-biased culture of continuous improvement and accountability to improve their KPI’s, including growth, productivity, asset utilization, inventory, and customer allegiance.
  • Responsible for building security, safety, reviewing facilities to maintain compliance to government regulations and OSHA requirements.
  • Recommends and develops ideas for improvement in operating methods and procedures.
  • Oversees building maintenance including collecting and negotiating bids for facility projects, coordinating projects to fit the business needs and oversees the quality of work performed by external contractor/vendor services.
  • Serves as a liaison with corporate engineering, local fire and police and other town officials as needed.
  • Issues and maintains security access cards and keys to the appropriate levels of employees for the facility.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • BA/BS required. Engineering, Science or EHS related degree program preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of applicable experience (EHS and Continuous Improvement) required.
  • Project management experience
  • LEAN, 6 Sigma training preferred
  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to work across a highly matrixed, cross-functional organization.
  • Team player, professional, detail-oriented, thorough and honest
  • Ability to multitask, solve problems, and prioritize in a fast-paced global environment
  • Self-motivated to follow tasks through to completion
  • Computer proficiency - MS office, database systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs on an as needed basis
