Job Title: Lathe/Milling Precision Machinist

Department: Engineering

Location: Milan IT

Reports to: Manager, Mechanical Engineering

Position Summary

Our multi-disciplinary team is looking for a key member in the research and development of the next generation of analytical instrumentation. Our work exists at the intersection of physics, high precision mechanical designs, electronics, firmware, and software.

As a Lathe/Milling Precision Machinist in our Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry business, you will be responsible for operating of manual machines which may include conventional lathes, mills, bench pillar drills and various standard machine shop equipment in our prototyping workshop. You will be responsible for creating one offs and prototypes as well as small batches to suit all engineering requirements working in stainless steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, plastics etc. in order to introduce new and improved products. You will also be required to help out in the general prototyping activity with any duties offered.

As we work in a collaborative environment, the successful candidate must be capable of working within a team environment, supporting the engineering activity and achieving daily targets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work from broad instructions, engineering drawings, sketches, and oral instructions, to perform difficult and diversified fabrications involving the use of hand and power tools to prototype, fit and assemble complicated machined parts and components.
  • Work to exacting requirements as to concentricity and other interrelated dimensions.
  • Perform tube-bending operations by hand when required
  • Perform brazing on small parts and tubes.
  • Perform any non-electrical assembly work to the prototype assembly as needed
  • Partecipate in preproduction activities.
  • Note and report discrepancies between existing drawings, tooling and production items, make recommendations regarding problems with cognizance of production and quality requirements.
  • Perform First Article Inspection on ordered parts.
  • Perform pressure leak test on manifolds and welded parts. Make associated jigs and fixtures.
  • Note and report discrepancies between existing drawings, tooling and production items, make recommendations regarding problems with cognizance of production and quality requirements.
  • Ability to modify tools for metal cutting or make special ones.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or 3 years high school
  • 5-7 years of experience in operating and setting manual conventional lathes and milling.
  • Successful candidates from the interview stage will need to demonstrate their ability to use a manual lathe and a manual milling machine in a trial session to be discussed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions

  • A very good understanding of and abilities on conventional lathes and milling machines. Ability on bench CNC milling machined is a plus.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and follow work instructions.
  • Able to work to tight tolerances.
  • Knowledge of solder brazing
  • Competent on all aspects of setting tools, including having an understanding of cutting speeds and feeds.
  • Strong experience using measurement/inspection equipment including verniers, bore gauges, micrometres etc.
  • Use shop mathematics and handbook formulas to lay out work correctly.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a project team environment.
  • Ability to complete First Article inspections.
  • Ability to estimate completion time of machining parts.
  • Ability to estimate manufacturing costs.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to read and write in English is required, able to speak is desirable.
  • Ability to follow through on tasks to completion.
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised once trained.
  • Follow 5S requirements.

  • Make technical decisions on machining parts.
  • Can recommend purchase but must receive approval from more senior staff with the appropriate expenditure approval authority.
  • Propose product, procedure, and process improvements to departmental management.
  • Propose capital equipment purchases for approval by departmental management.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

Physical Activities: Light lifting of instruments required.
Level of Physical Requirements: Must have good manual dexterity and be able to assemble small components and perform mechanical alignment. Must be able to read computer screens, paper documents, equipment outputs. No specific hearing requirements but must be able to understand and communicate highly technical information. Must be able to wear safety glasses and safety shoes.
Level of Visual Acuity: Must be able to do visual inspection of critical components for surface defects and contaminants. Environmental Conditions: Well-lit, small workshop.

Interaction with Other Employees

This position requires rarely contact with outside suppliers or vendors. Internal contacts are required both within and between departments. Communication skills must be sufficient to potentially negotiate problem resolution throughout the R&D team and suppliers.
