Reporting to the Director of Product Marketing for TEM, The Product Manager (PM) partners with the Product Marketing Managers (PMM’s) who have responsibility for the main TEM platform roadmaps. The primary objective is to create differentiated solutions that drive growth of our TEM segment, the Materials Science Business Unit and the parent Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD). Focusing on the realization of products, driving synergy between customer needs and requirements with platform technologies and innovation capabilities, the Product Manager assures that the final output provides the promised value and margin

The Product Manager is driven and motivated by the business success of the Thermo Fisher Scientific products they own, acting as the initiator for actions that can increase the success of the products. In all actions driving the internal organization, the business success of the product is the primary driving factor. The Product Manager needs to assist in negotiating the best possible specifications versus time to market, guiding the development process. As part of the wider TEM team, the Product Manager is aware of the competitor's products and will propose corrective actions to developments where necessary, promoting new opportunities resulting from new technologies or applications. As necessary the Product Manager will also become involved with a number of partnerships with our customers and/or other companies to help drive existing or new developments and opportunities.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Driving Profit: Focus on continuous improvement in profitability. Helping align investments to portfolio strategy, monitoring execution to plan, identifying trends and threats, influencing internal processes to counteract. An important component is the continuous drive to decrease product costs.
  • Project Management: Defining, overseeing, and coordinating a group of projects across a matrix organization, tracking performance against schedule, budget and resources associated with the program to effectively execute product realization.
  • Driving the Research and Development organization, participating in weekly R&D update meetings with the PMM, Program Execution Manager and Technical Lead to define optimum (engineering) response to the business requirements.
  • Product Ownership: own the system tree of existing products within the TEM portfolio including system specifications in joint collaboration with the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) organization .
  • Manage individual Non-Standard-Requests (NSR’s) by judging them on Technical feasibility and supporting the scoping of the activity.
  • Actively support Sales cycles for situations where in depth technical expertise and roadmap knowledge is required
  • Manage Customer Witness Acceptance Tests (CWAT’s or ‘Source Inspections’)


Functional Background:
  • The ideal candidate for this position is a highly-skilled technical professional who enjoys technical problem solving and the complexity of large program delivery.
  • University degree in a relevant scientific field is required. Strong preference for an advanced scientific degree.
  • Relevant product management, engineering management or applications management experience in a high tech environment related to the market served.
  • Proven track record working on multi-national cross-functional projects.
  • Experienced interacting with highly-technical internal customers. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and influence diverse audiences is critical to the success of this position.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally.
Domain Background:
  • Experience in the theory of analytical instrumentation technologies, and related modern commercial application techniques. This position requires an understanding of customer use cases.
  • Affinity with or experience in electron microscopy, technology and applications is preferred as is a Materials Science or Physics background.
