Thermo Fisher Earns Perfect Score Second Year in a Row
In recognition of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s efforts to elevate its culture of inclusivity, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation has awarded our company with a perfect score of 100 on the 2017 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for the second year in a row.
The HRC is the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization in the United States. They envision a future where LGBT people are ensured their basic equal rights and are able to be open at work and in their communities. The CEI tool was developed by HRC to measure a corporation’s policies, practices, and training for their LGBT employees and its aim is to promote best practices of inclusivity within work environments across the United States. Thermo Fisher is in good company with organizations such as American Express, Starbucks, and Southwest; they also achieved a perfect score in 2017.
“Taking a step back and seeing how far we’ve come as a company is a humbling and proud moment,” said Alan Nevel, Vice President of the office of Global Diversity and Inclusion. “However, this is where the challenge begins for us, we must continue with this momentum, strive and push harder to become one of the most admired companies in the world.”
Our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allies Employee Resource Group (LGBTA ERG) contributed to the company’s score. The LGBTA ERG helped implement policies that provide equal health coverage for transgender individuals, helped create a nurturing environment that delivers growth and development of LGBTA owned business and hosts’ global webinars and local seminars to support employees who identify as LGBTA. The HRC felt that the LGBTA ERG truly set Thermo Fisher apart from other companies.
Having a perfect score for a second year in a row is hard to maintain. Our compliance specialist, Renee Byrd, went into depth providing the HRC with our story. We would not have won this prestige title without her help. We must also thank our LGBTA ERG who contributed to this score by pushing for new training, medical benefits, and policy changes. Once the HRC reviewed the mission and vision Thermo Fisher has for the LGBTA community, they felt these guidelines truly set our company apart from others. By leveraging our existing council and ERG, we are pushing our office towards our goal of becoming the most admired company.
In addition, the LGBTA ERG has positioned themselves as a resource group for employees who identify with this community. Their offerings position and align the group to be supportive but also address the changes within the company that promote basic equality throughout our work environment. The ERG has implemented internal training programs that allow all employees to understand issues the community faces and could potentially face in a future corporate work setting.
The perfect score of 100 is something the D&I team wants to maintain with the years to come. As a company, we need to continue with the progress we have demonstrated to the Human Rights Campaign. Our company is striving to push for an inclusive future that allows us to welcome people with different skills and backgrounds to keep our business innovating and creating a healthier, cleaner, safer environment.
