Moving to Rochester: A Teenage Boy's Perspective
Are you considering relocating to Rochester to join the Thermo Fisher team? We know moving your family to a new city can be quite stressful, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Plant Manager Jeremy Sharkey knows that more than anyone.
In 2012, Jeremy relocated his family to Rochester to continue his career with us. Jeremy witnessed his high school age son Connor experience a tough move, initially disappointed after leaving his friends. Years later, though, Connor came to an insightful conclusion. Take a look at a speech he gave at a varsity football banquet:
“To put it in simple terms, I was devastated when I first heard that we would be following my dad’s career to a new city. I would be leaving my familiar surroundings and my lifelong friends. What scared me most was the unknown change that lay ahead. After the hours of packing and countless sad goodbyes, the Sharkey family made the trek to our new home: Rochester, New York.
At first, it was worse than I imagined. We first lived in an apartment (which had obviously housed cats due to the foul odor), and school was no better. For a couple weeks, it was just me sitting alone at a lunch table.
Then my new life began to take a 180-degree turn. By joining the basketball team, I began to make new friends, along with friends from the football team and my classes. I began to reach a new social level I had never dreamed of reaching at my old school. Not to mention, that smelly old apartment quickly changed into a move to a beautiful new house, with my own bedroom in the basement.
With time, the move became the best thing that ever happened to me. I became a part of one of the best football teams in the state and made countless priceless relationships with new friends. The move also put me into many new opportunities, as it helped me get into a much better college than I could have imagined, along with the chance to play college football. I learned countless new skills; however, the most important was changing my attitude towards the future and welcoming change.
I owe a debt of gratitude to Thermo Fisher Scientific and my father for helping me achieve what I have today.”
Join the Thermo Fisher Scientific team and let us welcome you to the Rochester community.
