After I graduated from business school, I came to Thermo Fisher Scientific through the Graduate Leadership Development Program. In the program, I worked across the areas of finance, marketing and operations in roles that tested all aspects of my management skills.
Once I completed the program, I was prepared to move into a position where I ran a global product line, launching products that helped customers meet stringent air quality standards. I even got to present to the China Ministry of Environment on a timely topic—monitoring the particulate matter emitted by coal-fired plants. We had come up with a revolutionary approach to address this complex measurement, and as I was presenting our work to the delegates, I remember pointing outside the window to the hazy Beijing sky and saying that this is why we were there in that room.
